Digital National Framework - is helped with navigation

Viper Case Study

The Brief

Ordnance Survey and AGI commissioned Viper to improve the visual appearance and navigation of the DNF website which over the years had become complex in its layout and consequently difficult for both technical and casual visitors to find their way around.

The brief was to breathe life into a public-facing area of the site as well as produce more complex event and scheduling features for members within a password protected area.

The Solution

Using our proven and highly scalable and flexible website development platform Expression Engine we set about creating a new structure for the two elements of the site.

The two areas needed to compliment each other whilst delivering very different user experiences.

From news and event information to technical case studies showing the vast array of applications of geographic information across a range of industries from commercial to public sector, the new site ensures visitors are presented with a 'crumb trail' so they can retrace their steps from wherever they are.

To manage the project we used our Basecamp project management service which allowed the client access 24/7 to progress, files, comments and message threads as we worked closely with them through to launch of the website.

An important consideration in the project was W3C compliance and the site passes with glowing colours as well as guaranteeing 99.99% up time due to resilient web hosting.

The client has access to the content management system for the website allowing them to keep accounts, members and content up to date in real time using an intuitive web-based dashboard helping them to control the administration.

The Result

The Digital National Framework is at the heart of the management and development of geographic information initiatives in Great Britain and the new website will allow it to effectively position new projects at the same time as manage the logistics and flow of information between members.

“We were delighted with the work that Viper did on the re-design of our website.  Not only did it improve the overall appearance but made the site much easier to navigate and also introduced new features that we had been unable to do with our old one.  Furthermore all credit to the Viper team for the patient and professional manner in which it handled the project and in the way it steered us through to a successful re-launch of the site.  We would have no hesitation to work with Viper again”.
