They Say Event Management Is Glamourous
What they don't tell you about event management is that you wake up in the middle of the night feeling you have forgotten to do something but you aren't sure what it is. You have lists upon lists of people to contact and things to do but a nagging feeling something is missing. You dream at night that everything is done but nobody turns up to the event as you got the wrong date or everyone turns up but you forgot to book and organise everything.
It's not really that bad and in fact it's a lot of fun, but you have to serve your time in Stressville before you can settle back in the knowledge that you know what you are doing and that your to-do lists are indeed fully comprehensive.
The challenge is that everything is ultimately your responsibility. From the smiles on the faces of the attendees to the tiny little wire that if it isn't plugged in quite right breaks the circuit and something major doesn't function. It's all down to the event manager.
And even the weather, yes the most unpredictable element in any outdoor event is also the responsibility of the event manager. Well who else is there to blame. They should surely have booked the weather too.
So why do we do it? For some it maybe the buzz. For others the ego thing. For me it's the idea that I'm just the catalyst for hundreds of people doing something amazing: riding their bikes for 24 hours to help innocent children who are suffering at the hands of cancer and leukaemia. It's the riders who make my event happen rather than the event management..... that's just the behind the scenes detail. And at the end if we can raise another £50,000 for CLIC Sargent then it's all worth it.
But for now... where's my list... I feel the need, the need to put some ticks in boxes.
