Viper Future

‘Shock and delight’ for National Trust

Viper Case Study

The Brief

The National Trust wanted to broaden people’s perception and expectations of what they would find at their properties. At Montacute House and other nearby properties they have put some intriguing items that allow adventure, play, nostalgia, peace and relaxation. Swings. Simple.

Beautiful, bespoke artistic swings. A piece of wood lashed to a branch. Interpretative swings connected to the property. Fun on a rope in fourteen different varieties.

The National Trust wanted an organisation that could produce a different leaflet. They wanted to capture the fun of swings for all generations. They wanted the words and the design to be just as fun as the swings. The project managers asked for something different, a leaflet the Trust wouldn’t normally produce.

The Solution

The National Trust has very clear brand guidelines and rightly so. We knew we had to tick the brand guidelines off first or we’d never get any further. When a client asks for something ‘alternative’ it can be difficult to gauge how alternative they really want to go.

The first draft complied with the brand guidelines then we added the layers of silliness. We knew if we took it too far we could then just peel them off until the project managers were comfortable.

The Result

‘Forget the manor house, it’s quite small anyway.’ How we got away with these words in a National Trust leaflet I’ll never know?

At first glance it’s a classic National Trust leaflet. Look again and you’ll find layers of quotes and cartoons that add depth. I’d like to come up with grand statements of anarchic subversion but we were just being silly. We did sneak some punk lyrics in there if you can find them!

Apparently we created ‘shock and delight‘ with National Trust staff. Spot on.

Just for the record; we wrote it, we designed it, we drew the pictures for it and we really enjoyed it. And we also designed the on-site signs but they weren’t that silly.
