Visual Solution for Biosphere and AONB

Viper Case Study

The Brief

Two potentially complex landscape designations on one area could lead to some complicated messages being sent out. The North Devon Biosphere encompasses the North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Both important designations to protect subtly different aspects of the landscape. For someone living there this could get confusing. Viper have taken the AONB team and the Biosphere team through the facilitated Communication Planning Framework we use to understand the messages, audiences and tools needed. The challenge was to communicate quickly and visually how the two designations support each other.

The Solution

Viper proposed a diagrammatic model that represents the Biosphere as a complete sphere scooped out of North Devon. The image we designed shows how a biosphere designation encompasses the geology and atmosphere of the water catchment of the coastline plus how it goes out to sea taking in Lundy island. The AONB is the coastline 'at the heart of the Biosphere'. This phrase gained popularity as it explained the dual designations of the area without giving priority to one or the other, this was politically important.

The Result

A creative and visual solution to a complex problem. Trying to explain how these designations worked together to the average person is really difficult. In this case a picture really can save a thousand words. Both the Biosphere and the AONB team now have a joint image they can use across all their media to get their important message across in a unified way.
