Viper Adventure

Biosphere Leaflet has Something Missing

Viper Case Study

The Brief

The North Devon Biosphere team needed a visitor guide for Jo and Alice. Quite specific, but we knew what they meant. Luckily we’d helped the team with their audience planning previously so we knew exactly who Jo and Alice are.

North Devon is a world class landscape designated a Biosphere by the United Nations.

Jo is a young, environmentally friendly water-sports enthusiast, who loves North Devon. Alice is a semi-retired, countryside loving long-distance walker, who’s been visiting North Devon for years and is thinking of retiring there.

The visitor guide had to engage these audience types, stimulate their creativity and introduce them to aspects of the Biosphere they’d never thought of. North Devon is famous for its coastline but the Biosphere stretches from Lundy Island right the way in-land to Dartmoor National Park and across to Exmoor National Park.

The Solution

We seized on the idea of ‘looking at the Biosphere differently’. The Biosphere globe, another Viper creation to explain the concept of a biosphere, was the inspiration for a cut-out circle in the cover. This tantalizingly revealed an image inside, inviting you to pick it up and open the leaflet. You’re then encouraged to frame view of the Biosphere through the cut-out.

When you have a clear picture in your head of the audience the design and content can just flow. We knew we had to show Jo on the cover, so there she is. Looking through the hole. We knew Jo and Alice are supportive of the environmental cause of the Biosphere even if they don’t understand exactly what one is, so the content was gently suggestive of other things they could do to help the environment while enjoying themselves.

Jo and Alice are even encouraged to leave a memory in an on-line photo-guestbook.

The Result

The 3D quality of the cover literally makes the leaflet stand out in the rack. It grabs your eye first over all the other leaflets.

Inside less is more. The circle concept is carried throughout making it easy for the eye to follow the design through and tying it all together nicely. We let a clear colour palette suggest the landscapes and the few words add value rather than turning it into a book.

We’re very proud of this ‘world-class’ leaflet for one of our United Nation's Biosphere Reserves.
