Overlooking the Wye Website

Overlooking the Wye Website

The Brief

Overlooking the Wye was a £2.8 million Landscape Partnership Scheme, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund within the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), between 2008 and 2012.

The team needed a website to capture the work undertaken to protect and teach people about the rich heritage sites in the valley. Part interpretation vehicle and part project summary.

The site needed to build on the established interpretation theme of the project and a previously started website. As the site was to be handed to the Wye Valley AONB team, due to the project completion, they needed the Content Management System to be the same as for the main AONB site, also built by Viper.

The Solution

The site was completely overhauled with a new, more intuitive structure added. A large amount of research on heritage sites was made accessible through the sites ‘shallow’ structure. A couple of clicks and all the resources about a location are presented, including ‘nearby’ places that the viewer may find useful.

The content management was made incredibly simple through the use of a multi-site manager tool. One login and one content management system but for different sites.

The Result

The site represents the tip of the iceberg for this major heritage project. Visitors and historians interested in the area now have an amazing legacy to draw upon.

The culmination of many hours research can all be found in one place now. The site should not overshadow this but complement it by intuitive navigation and a simple structure.

The Wye Valley AONB team felt it important that people recognise the Overlooking the Wye project was overseen by themselves. For this reason the main portal for the site is through the Wye Valley AONB site homepage but it also has its own web address. The two sites also share the interactive map, making it easier for visitors to find heriateg sites alongside other places of interest.
